in other news :: home made laundry detergent recipe

othernews

if you follow me on facebook or twitter, you may have heard me mention that i was going to attempt to make my own laundry detergent. i was shocked at the responses i got to my posts! everyone wanted to see how it turned out and try it themselves. i did two loads yesterday and things seemed to come out a.o.k. i didn't notice any residue or anything crazy on my clothes and they came out smelling clean. so, here's the recipe for the detergent i made:

laundry

this recipe makes a total of 10 gallons of liquid detergent (although, you only need a 5 gallon bucket, you'll see why later)

5 gallon bucket with cover (we got ours at home depot for about $3.00)
4 cups hot tap water
1 fels-naptha bar of soap
1 cup super washing soda (by arm & hammer)
1/2 cup borax

grate the bar of soap into the 4 cups of hot tap water over medium-low heat until it's completely dissolved. (this bar of soap is much harder than i expected. grating it took some time and a lot of muscle. next time i might chop into small chunks with a kitchen knife and then put in the food processor)

next, fill your 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full with hot tap water. pour melted soap & water mixture into bucket along with the washing soda and borax. stir until all powder is completely dissolved. finish by filling bucket to the top with more hot tap water. stir again, cover, and let sit overnight to cool.

once cooled, mix thoroughly and pour into a used laundry soap dispenser until 1/2 full. fill the remainder of the dispenser with water. shake to mix thoroughly. you will need to shake dispenser before each use as the detergent gels.

i didn't use any this time, but if you'd like you can add essential oils to make your detergent smell prettier. use approx. 20-30 drops per 5 gallon bucket.

for front loading washers use 1/4 cup per load
for top loading washers use 5/8 cup per load

as for price, this 10 gallon supply cost us approximately $5-$6 dollars. (that's including the bucket!!!) the fels bar cost approx $2. the borax was about $4. the washing soda cost about $3. the borax and washing soda came in big boxes and we only use between 1/2 and 1 cup for 10 gallons. we'll have enough of those two for about 10 more mixes! so the only thing we need to buy next time is the fels bar.

one thing to note, we had a really hard time finding the super washing soda. i would recommend calling around before you run out to get some. we tried 4 stores before coming home and calling around. so far we only found 2 places locally that carry it. you can always order it online, but it obviously increases the cost quite a bit because of shipping charges. even so, the box will last quite a long time and overall, not add a ton of cost to the mix.

i also found a recipe for fabric softener which i'll try as soon as my current sheets run out! i'll be sure to share if it works well.

in other news :: top 100 arts blogs

othernews

i just had to share this little tidbit with you. the lovely katrina over at pugly pixel informed me yesterday that i had made the top 100 arts blogs list on technorati! what's technorati you may ask? (so did i!) it's a site that rates blogs. i'm not totally clear on how the rating works. it has to do with links to your blog from other blogs. the higher on the list those other blogs are, the better your score. from what i understand, we're not talking about blogrolls here. these are content based links. so, things like being linked from design*sponge really helps my score because they're high on the list themselves. (see, i just helped her out by linking to them in my content! not that she needs it, but you get the idea)

so, anyway, just a fun little thing to share. right now i'm #55 on the arts list, but from what i hear it changes a lot and often. so, i'll bask in the "fame" for a moment in case it doesn't happen again for awhile!

scoutie girl feature :: blown away

othernews

i was so blown away by this discovery last night that i just had to share. tara from scoutie girl wrote a post yesterday about what inspires her. being a super-amazing blogger, tara sees a million beautiful things every day. she's surrounded by inspiration in everything she does. you can only imagine my surprise when i discovered little old me in her list of people that inspire her! i nearly fell off the couch. (see, that's me there in the lower left! ....and that's my good friend mari right above me!) it ALWAYS amazes me when someone says that i inspire them, but this....this is beyond amazing to me. this is a woman who runs a super-successful blog and has a baby at home. being someone in the same situation, i know how much work that takes. the fact that she's inspired by me or anything i do is just about the biggest form of flattery you could possibly give me. thank you tara. the feeling is mutual!

othernews

i signed up for a formspring account over the weekend. it's a fun little place where you can ask other people questions or have them asked of yourself! i love finding out more about people, especially those that i've "met" on the internet. stop on over and ask me a question. (you can even ask anonymously if you're shy....but i'd love to know who you are!) what would you like to know? i'm open to pretty much anything! or, if you prefer, can can follow me to see what others are asking and read the answers i give.

favorite of 2009

othernews

my parents asked me to design their holiday card this year for the first time. they had recently gotten an old '51 chevy (??) delivered to their "back 40" as they like to call it. it's really their wildflower garden that they've spent the last few years working on. they really wanted to use a photo of the truck on their christmas card but didn't know what to say. i liked the idea because it's not your typical holiday card. she asked me to come up with something funny. after hemming & hawing for awhile, this is what i came up with:

mom & dad christmas 2009

i wasn't sure what they would think. i know my parents can laugh at themselves, but i wasn't really sure if this is what they wanted their christmas cards to say. my mom called when she got the proof and said it was "freaking hilarious". now, if you know anything about my mom, you know that's a HUGE statement. she's not the type to get worked up about things AT. ALL.

so here it is. my favorite design for 2009. unexpected. funny.

a year in photos :: GIVEAWAY!

this sunday marks the 1 year anniversary of my "photo of the day" posts. it all started with a new camera i got for my birthday. i thought it would be fun to track my progress of learning how to take better photos. here was my first photo:

the beginning

i feel like i've learned a lot in the last year, but i know i have a lot, lot more to learn! i'm ok knowing that i'll probably never be a super-great photographer because it's more about having fun for me. i enjoy being able to take semi-decent photos of my kids and the things around me....and that's enough. this isn't to say that i'm going to stop learning. i would love to get better, maybe even take a class, but even if that doesn't happen, i'm content.

i've gotten a lot of comments and compliments on my photos throughout the year. it makes me happy to know that some of you may be enjoying them too! i've even had a few suggest that i should sell prints! i'm not sure i feel my work is good enough to sell quite yet, but it's flattering to know that some think it is.

i thought a good way to repay you all for visiting and commenting on my photos (please continue!!) would be to have a little giveaway! while i don't feel confident enough to charge for my photography yet, i'd love to give some away! all you have to do to enter is visit my flickr "photo of the day" photostream and pick your favorite from this year. come back here and enter the name to win! (they're all named by date) 3 lucky winners will win an 8x10 professional print of the photo of their choice!

i'll leave the contest open through sunday (the official anniversary of the photo of the day) at midnight (cst).

i sure would appreciate your help spreading the word of the contest through twitter and facebook (and maybe even your own blog) if you can!

happy anniversary baby

othernews

today is the hubby and my 8th wedding anniversary. we agreed not to do gifts this year since we have spent so much money on our house this summer with all the renovations. i was fine without spending any money, but i wanted to have something to give to him so i created the print below. it's the lyrics to the song "my best friend" by weezer. they pretty much sum up how i feel about him. he is my best friend, without a doubt. happy anniversary baby. love you. here's the next 8 years and many more to come!

remodel

we're in the midst of a small-ish remodeling project and i need to take a few days off from my photo of the day. this is the first i'll be missing in nearly a year and it feels sort of strange. i just need some time to focus on getting this job done in time for the baby's birthday party in a few weeks! photos of the day may be sparse for the next week or so. i'll do my best! i leave you with a very small sneak peek of the project!
