in case you were wondering....
yes, it is possible to sleep standing up!
the little dude was having a rough time falling asleep last night. we had to go up and talk to him several times. well, when i headed to bed, i went in to check on him, (and cover him up since he's always cold) this is what i found!
is this not the sweetest, saddest, most adorable thing you've ever seen? i had the hardest time taking a picture because i couldn't stop from giggling and then the camera would shake. i managed to get him back up into bed without even waking him up. he was zonkered!

field trip : pumpkin farm
today the little dude's preschool went to a local pumpkin farm. here, they got to:
jump in the bouncy house (since our wagon ride was cancelled because of too much mud.)
read a book about pumpkins.
sing a song about a horse.
feed the goats ice cream cones filled with goat feed. (and look at a million other animals)
and explore thousands of pumpkins!
and more pumpkins.
and still more pumpkins.
fun was had by all....even with the muddy, muddy weather.

how to preserve your child's artwork
the little dude created a piece of artwork in pre-school last year that i really loved. it's green and orange which happen to match the colors of our kitchen. the photos don't do it justice. i wanted to preserve this piece of artwork to display it over our eating bar area. i thought i'd share with you how we did it in case you'd like to do the same! please note that this can be done with any artwork and is a great alternative to framing.
here's the piece of artwork in question. as you can see it was done on really thin paper. being that it was a watercolor type painting, it was very wrinkly. the one thing to keep in mind is that with thin paper like this, it will most likely get very wrinkly when applied to the canvas. if you're not ok with this, then this might not be the right solution for your piece of art. the nicer or thicker the paper, the less chance of wrinkling.
i started out by buying a canvas that would fit the particular painting. there wasn't a perfect size, but this one came pretty close. we only had to trim a small bit off the top of the artwork. (which was fine by me because his teachers wrote his name on the front of the painting! tsk, tsk!) i also bought mod podge (other glues/sealers will work as well), a small roller and tray. then we're ready to start.
here's the little dude rolling on the glue with his mini roller. you want to make sure you have a good thick layer of glue so it sticks well. once you have it covered in glue, lay the artwork down and press firmly. try to press out any wrinkles or puckers to the best of your ability.
we then flipped it over (lining the island with parchment paper (or waxed paper would be fine) first so that it wouldn't stick to the island) we loaded it up with magazines to ensure solid pressure. we left it like this overnight to make sure it was really dry.
once it was thoroughly dry, we removed the magazines. next, we glued the sides and the back and wrapped the artwork around the canvas. (note: you don't have to do this. you could trim the artwork to the exact size of the canvas if you wish. you could also paint the sides a coordinating color....i would do this first however.)
when wrapping the paper around the canvas i folded the corners as if i was wrapping a present. we then flipped it over onto the parchment paper again so that the back was now facing down. this ensured that the artwork would not pull away from the back. again, we left it to dry overnight.
when completely dry, we hung it up over the bar. voila!

feeling daring
i've always been an admirer of people who can put together a totally fun outfit that isn't too out there, but has a little bit of unexpected flair. i'm one of those people who buy things that i wish i could wear, but when it comes time to leave the house in it i completely cave. i can't tell you how much money i've wasted on things that i thought would be so cool, but then chickened out when it actually came time to wear them. so i saw these pink tights on clearance a few weeks back and had another one of my "moments". i figured even if they sat in my drawer and never get worn i only wasted $1.99 on them.
well, today i put my brave face on and actually wore them. not only around the house, but out in public! i had to take the little dude to pre-school and i also had to go meet a new babysitter for the first time! funny thing was, i didn't feel out of place! here's to the continuation of a new, brave wardrobe!

trail blazers
we've been looking for a bike trailer for the kids all summer on craigslist and such because they're so expensive new. well, after waiting and waiting we finally found one about a week ago. here are the kiddos in the back waiting to take their first excursion! they loved it. i only hope that the little dude doesn't grow too much to fit it in once the snow melts next spring!

conversation with a 3 year old : take 2
scene 1 : act 1
mommy, daddy, little dude, and baby are all in the kitchen having lunch together. as usual, the little dude is eating fruit by the pound. once again amazed at how much fruit that little body can consume, the following conversation was started:
mommy: (jokingly to daddy) i think the little dude is a fruit bat.
little dude: mommy, i'm not a fruit bat. i'm a giraffe.......
(pointing to his baby brother)......and he's barack obama.
oh my god! both the hubby and i almost shot food out of our noses! he just said it so nonchalant like it was perfectly normal for a 3 year old to not only know who barack obama is, but to then refer to his brother as such!
it's quite obvious who the little dude would vote for were he 15 years older!

bounce!
now that the little dude is in pre-school, the birthday party invitations are going to start coming home like crazy. we had our first one this weekend. it was at a place in town that has a whole level of inflatables! you can see by the photo above that this place is huge. i'm actually standing in the middle of the room! there's a lot more that you're not seeing. and for comparison in size, that's the baby in the middle of the picture! a fun time was had by all. pizza, presents, cupcakes, and then home for a 3 hour nap!! gotta love the post-birthday-party-extra-long nap!
