thrifted :: folded measuring stick

5_thursday

foldingyardstick

this week's thrifty find is a folded measuring stick. i found this beauty at the same flea market as my tea box. it's actually from the same vendor! it was marked $15 but crossed out and marked down to $5. when the seller wouldn't budge on the price of the tea box i asked if he would throw the ruler in for free. when he said "yes", i was stoked!

unfolded

not sure what it is about these old folding rulers, but they grab my attention every time i see one. i think it's the wood/metal combination along with the amazing old patina. this one unfolds to 72 inches!

thrifted :: kitchen canisters

5_thursday

i scored these awesome kitchen canisters at the same estate sale where i bought my little chicks and our new chair. (as well as a million other items!) got these on day 2, so they were half off. SCORE!

thrifted :: tea box

5_thursday

i can't believe it's taken me this long to feature one of my favorite thrifted items of this year! i bought this lovely tea box over a month ago!

thrifted tea box

i am in complete love with the graphics on this box. from the wood grain patterned background to the the vivid colors of the flowers and the graphic moon label on the front....it's all fantastic!

thrifted tea box

this thrifty find broke the bank at a whopping $40! much, much more than i typically spend on any one item, but i just couldn't resist.

thrifted tea box

the inside of the box is completely lined in tin. while i loved he graphics on the outside, discovering the tin on the inside is what really put me over the edge.

thrifted tea box

i have a major obsession with boxes and drawers of any sort, so this definitely found the right home.

how about you? do you have collections? what are the things you can't resist when you come across them?

thrifted :: bingo ball

5_thursday

i found this vintage bingo ball at a thrift shop a couple weeks ago. in case you don't know what a bingo ball is, it's where you put all the numbers for bingo. the caller spins it around and the next number comes out of the little rotating cup.

bingo ball

i found the bingo ball and immediately knew what i wanted to do with it. i brought it home and made it the perfect home for my grandfather's childhood marbles.

what would you put in a bingo ball if you found one?

thrifted :: vintage ceramic doll

5_thursday

check out this little cutie i found last friday! she's made of ceramic and captured my heart even though i'm not typically a doll person. at all. i just love everything about her.

vintage ceramic doll

if anyone knows anything about her, feel free to let me know!

vintage ceramic doll

i paid more for her than i usually would, but she was at an estate sale rather than a garage sale which makes a difference in pricing. she came home with me for $10.

thrifted :: vintage baby bird

5_thursday

i usually don't buy toys for myself when thrifting. if i buy toys, they're for my kids. when i came across this little guy i just couldn't pass him up!

vintage baby toy

i am so in love with the simple graphic forms and overall shape of this toy. it's just so classically beautiful.

vintage baby toy

plus, when you wobble him, he makes a lovely chiming sound. and with a price tag of .25, i had to bring him home! a small price for such grand inspiration.

thrifted :: things to fill my type drawer

5_thursday

one of my 101 in 1001 goals is to fill my vintage type drawer with fun little items. i went to a HUGE flea market the day before i left for the national stationery show.

vintage type tray

here are all my treasures from the flea market. i found a lot of little goodies. it was hard trying to find inexpensive little things. i tried to keep each item in the $2 range because when you have a million little spaces to fill, the cost adds up quickly.

i got the 2 buck/reindeer on the top for $4 for the pair. they're about a millimeter too big to fit in the largest hole. darn. but i think they look just as cute on top. i found some great copper and wood type. i got a few individual pieces like a clown face, and a unicorn and then some individual letters to spell out "fin" and "roe". i found some hand cast lead toy soldiers, a cow, two little white ceramic birds, and a few other farm animals. looks like i have quite the little animal theme going. it's fun to start seeing it come together.

lead horse

i also bought this super heavy, i assume it's lead, horse. she's so lovely and has an amazing patina. i believe she was once covered completely in a copper finish that you can see on her head and rear legs. i also believe she may have had a real hair tail, or some other sort of attached tail as it's now gone. she's a little too big to fit in my drawer spaces, but she's found a home right next to the drawer and keeps the other animals company.

thrifted :: mosaic glass chicks

5_thursday

thrifted chicks

one of my goals for my 101 in 1001 project is to find things to fill my vintage type drawer that i got for my birthday last year. the first objects to find their home in the drawer are these adorable little rooster/chick pair. (they're teeny-tiny...only about an inch tall) i found them at the amazing mid-century modern estate sale that we went to a few weeks back. i bought them on the first day which means i paid full price - something i don't typically do at estate sales since the prices are a little higher than my typical garage sale finds. i bought the pair for $6.00....way above my normal thrifty budget. still, i loved them so much, i couldn't pass them by.

thrifted :: glass pitcher

5_thursday

i came across this mid-century glass pitcher with wheat pattern on it a few weeks back. it instantly called my name from the shelves of the thrift store. it's clean lines and sleek wheat pattern were right up my alley. it's now my little reminder in the fridge to drink more water every day. if i remember right, i paid $2.50 for her.

thrifted :: bowling pins

i bought the tiny little cutie in this photo last summer with the little dude at an estate sale. i just picked up the other three (very used) pins at a local sale. i see a little collection emerging!

thrifted :: mid-century modern chair

5_thursday

got this fabulous mid-century modern chair at an estate sale this past weekend. it was at an amazingly cute little mid-century home (which was also for sale) and packed to the brim with authentic mid-century pieces. i heard it through the grapevine that the owner actually owned a furniture store downtown back in the day so every piece of furniture in their house was pristine and very well made. we went on saturday when everything was full price. there was a sofa and 2 side chairs (none of them part of a set, but all matching style). we wanted all of them but decided to take a chance and come back first thing in the morning when everything was 1/2 price. BIG MISTAKE! the couch and chair that i had fallen in love with were both sold. however, this chair, the one that the hubby liked, was still there. so, we picked it up for $47.50 ($95 the day before). it's in near-perfect condition. it's only missing a couple of the tufting buttons which can easily be replaced. it also has a little surprise of being a recliner! a little foot rest kicks out from underneath. the foot rest is quite tiny for the hubby, but would be good for me. right now it's calling our sunroom home. we hope that when we find a sofa and another side chair it will be part of our living room set.

thrifted :: huge dr. style bag

5_thursday

check out this bag! holy hannah, this bag is HUGE! i found it at a local garage sale a couple weeks ago. it had a price tag of $5 on it. i was hemming and hawing over whether to buy it. i loved it, but at the same time, i don't really have a need for it. i have tons of bags that i don't even use already. why did i need another one? the owner saw me debating and said i could take it home for $2.50! well, at that price, who can argue? i gladly tucked it under my arm and brought her home with me. now i just need to find a use!

in case you're wondering just how big this thing is, it's about 2 feet wide by a foot and a half tall. the base is at least 8" wide. this thing could fit a bus inside!

thrifted :: before & after :: shutters turned jewelry case

5_thursday

before

i've been very excited to share this project with you. it all started last summer with the above pair of small shutters i found at a garage sale. i knew exactly what i wanted to make with them but i wasn't sure what that "something" might hold. at first i thought i would use it in my office, but then i had the idea of creating a jewelry case to house all of my vintage jewelry finds.

closed

open

here's the finished product and a tutorial on how to make your own!

part of my challenge to myself with this project was to create it using materials that we already had. sort of a "green" thrifty project. i gathered some supplies and headed to my parent's house where my dad could help me with all the cutting. we don't have a ton of power tools here, so i needed to "borrow" some for the day.

cutting wood

i brought over some left over trim from who-knows-what-project that was just sitting around in the garage. i also had some left over peg board from my office makeover. we used these two items to build the "frame" of the case. we started by cutting a channel into each of the side boards in which the peg board would sit. once it was all cut, we glued, screwed, and clamped it together to dry. this was the most tool-intensive part of the project. after this, it was smooth sailing and i headed home to finish the rest.

framing sanding

once i got home i patched up some spots in the wood that needed it and sanded it down.

taping priming

once nice and smooth, i applied a coat of primer and white paint. (all things that i had here) one step that i forgot to photograph along the way was applying a metallic spray paint to the inside/back of the case. this was also something i had in my craft closet!

once the frame was all painted and finished, i moved onto the shutter portion of the project.

disassemble shutters

the first thing i did was remove all the hardware. most of it was painted over several times and/or in really rough shape. none of it was salvageable. i also did away with the fabric panels on the inside of the shutters as i wanted something a little more sleek. i lightly sanded and put a fresh coat of white paint on the shutters to match the case.

inserts

after the shutters were dry, i put in the inserts i made. this was sort of a painstaking process that most "normal" people probably wouldn't bother with, so i didn't photograph the steps, but i'll give you a quick rundown.

leafing

for the inserts: first i printed out some of my fin+roe patterns on my oversized printer to fit the panels. then i gold and silver leafed different areas of the pattern. i added a brown grosgrain ribbon accent near the bottom of the panel. because paper (even at 120#) is obviously a little floppy, i backed it with a chipboard then then a white paper on the back. i added the same grosgrain ribbon on the back of the panel as well so that when it's open it still looks finished. all of the supplies mentioned here were also things from the craft closet. nothing extra was purchased.

hinges

once the panels were all inserted, it was time to attach the shutters to the frame. unfortunately since the hinges were unsalvageable, i did have to buy a couple new sets. (plus the hinges that were attached were meant to hang directly on the wall so they wouldn't work for what i was doing) i simply pre-drilled some holes and screwed the hinges into both the shutters and the frame. the other thing i had to replace (and purchase) on this project was the knobs. the ones that were on when i bought them were crappy plastic pieces that were discolored. i picked up some inexpensive options at home depot and screwed them on. at this point i actually have a working case!

open side

jewels

i attached a couple photo hangers to the back and hung it in our bedroom (part of a bedroom makeover i'm slowly working on). the most fun part was hanging all of my necklaces in it and seeing my vision come to life! you may remember me posting about my jewelry drawers in our bathroom a few months back. not to worry. those are still there and i'll now be able to spread things out a little more since the necklaces have a home of their own. no more doubling up on brooches!

thrifted :: owl

5_thursday

i initially hoped to reveal my big thrifty project that i've been working on for the last couple months, but there are a few little details i want to take care of before doing so. so be sure to stop by next thursday to see that!

for this week's thrifty finds, i'm featuring an adorable little cast owl that my sweet friend hailey brought when she came to visit last weekend. hailey has a thrifting addiction just like me, so she knows just the kinds of things i like. she also has a cute little vintage shop on etsy.

owl

this little guys is so cute and graphic. (sorry for the photo quality) he's only about 2 inches high and not quite 2 inches wide. i'm not exactly sure what metal he's cast out of, but i'd have to guess brass. he's really heavy, so we assume he was a paperweight in a past life.

thanks hailey, i love my new little addition!
