spools & tool box

5_thursday

i have had so much fun thrifting lately i can hardly contain myself! i can't wait until fridays so i can go rummage sale-ing for a few hours in the morning, or to the thrift stores on the weekend! i've had a lot of great finds lately so i'm going to feature two new items today.

spools

i've collected old spools for quite awhile now. i have spools of all kinds. i just love the vibrant colors and simple beauty of them. i found all of these recently....some at a thrift store, some at a rummage sale. i think they were anywhere from 10 cents to 50 cents each.

box2

here's a great old tool box i found over the 4th of july weekend. i just love the paint, or lack there of, and the tall, thin nature of it. it's quite a large piece....probably about 2 and a half feet wide, 6 inches deep and about 18 inches high.

box

the box was found at a rummage sale just down the street from where we live. i paid 6 whole dollars for it! quite a steal in my book!

earrings

i was really taken with the feather earrings i posted about for scoutie girl a few weeks ago. since they're a little funky for the small town i live in, i was hesitant to purchase them for fear that i would never wear them. so, instead, i tried my hand at making my own so i could try them out and see if i was brave enough to wear them. the good news is that i've worn them several times and haven't been too self-conscience about them. i think i can actually say that i'm happen enough with them to create another pair! this time i'm going to search for a more unique bunch of feathers since our local craft stores didn't have a whole lot to choose from. what do you think? like? no like?

camparoo

6_friday

i'm sure i've mentioned our family camparoo before on my blog, but i'm too lazy to search for it now. this year's camparoo was held last weekend. our very large family all get together at my grandparent's farm, pitch tents, campers & such and spend the weekend hanging out. we usually just go for the day on saturday because we don't have a tent to stay in. hopefully next year we'll have one and the boys will be old enough to spend the night outside. i'm sure they'll be so excited.

we look forward to this weekend all year. i'm so blessed to have such an amazing family. unlike many families, there's never any drama, just plain old fun-times.

haulin

early saturday morning, my family was out in the yard helping grandma and grandpa get some work done. things like cleaning out gutters, trimming some trees, etc. here's the little dude "hauling" some of the fallen branches and leaves with his newly thrifted crane.

roe4

there's loads of stuff to do at the farm. everyone brings their atv's, there's a shooting range, volleyball, games, etc. never a dull moment. here's the baby testing out the 4 wheelers. he loved sitting on them until someone turned one one. then it was a different story!

papa4

and here's my dad with 3 of his 4 grandkids after a ride around the marsh. it took a little bit, but the baby finally decided it was ok to be on one while it was running!

pie

for the past few years we've had the "del ponte olympics". my aunt and uncle arrange it all and each year they have a different theme. since we have such a large family, we form 6 teams (one for each of grandma & grandpa's kids) each one having an aunt or uncle as a leader. this year's theme was "county fair". i don't have photos of the first 4 events because i was participating, but they were comprised of a "cow pie" toss, a knot untying race, cow "milking" race, hay bale flipping, and finally a pie eating contest. luckily only the "team leaders" (ie. my mom and aunts and uncles) had to participate in this last round. the above photo is taken at the start of the race. i'll be kind and keep the final photos private. ;) my team, which happened to be comprised of all women, took a close second place....only 1 point shy of first place.

unfortunately there was a loss at the camparoo this year. my aunt and uncle's dog rex passed away on saturday after long 14 years of life. the family was all there to support them and rex was laid to rest on the farm....a perfect resting place.

we're already looking forward to next year!

festival of the arts

othernews

this past weekend was the john michael kohler arts center festival of the arts. we try to go every year and check out all of the art for sale. this year we were actually considering not going. not that we don't enjoy it, but all of the art is so incredibly expensive. the art booths there are focused more on high-art. things like $3000 turned wood bowl, original paintings, etc. etc. while we appreciate this type of art, we can't really afford to buy any of it.

it turned out to be a nice day so we decided to take a walk and check it out. if nothing else it would be good family time.

well, much to my delight, i found a new vendor this year! geri from gajettes was delightful as were all of her products! she makes everything from recycled and reclaimed fabrics. i bought this adorable skirt below. i've already worn it twice....i'm so in love with it.

skirt_full

i love the a-line cut, it's so flattering. plus it has a little stretch so it was very forgiving and comfortable to wear.

skirt_close

here's a close up of the adorable pocket detail. (along with the crazy baby in the background who wouldn't stay out of the photos!)

i was debating between two skirts at the festival, but then saw a "prototype" dress that geri was wearing and decided to buy only one skirt so that i could buy the dress when it became available! i'm so excited and can't wait!

oh, and the best thing....she's a local wisconsinite!! woot, woot!

thrifted camera case

5_thursday

in my very first "things i want tuesday" post, i featured a old cosmetic suitcase that i thought would be a perfect case for my camera. i've been hunting for something similar at the local thrift stores and have had quite a time trying to find something. turns out they're rather hard to find!

then, last month, we were out of town for a wedding. there was a ton of time between the ceremony and the reception so we drove around town and happened upon a thrift store. inside, i found what i had been looking for! like most items in thrift stores, it was quite dirty and needed some tlc. after a good cleaning and a little ribbon accent, i have a new camera case....all for $2.50 (plus the ribbon which i already had in my craft closet).

thrifted camera box

i added 2 little bow details to the back as a surprise. they also cover up the area where the ribbon overlaps.

and here's the inside of the case.
